Magical Blues and Lavenders
Misty blues and lavenders, most of which come into bloom with summer heat, lend calm, soothing notes to gardens. Russians sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) refreshes with its vertical masses of foliage and flowers. Leaves are silvery and aromatic; flowers are steely-blue and tiny. Choose ‘Filigran’ for a most elegant effect; the foliage is more divided and feathery than that of other Russian sage varieties. For a particularly hazy aura, plant in groups; just be sure to find a spot with full sun and well-drained soil.

Drifting panicles of sea lavender (Limonium latifoliam) epitomize the word ethereal, so sweet are its tiny lavender flowers, and so slender its wiry stems. Flower heads rise from a flat rosette of dark green leaves. This sun-loving perennial, one of the easiest to dry, is a classic for dried arrangements. Cut when flowers have first opened; hang springs upside down in a dry, well-ventilated place. –Molly Dean
